My father was in the Navy, so my sister and I moved around a lot. Opposite is Judy, one of my excellent canine nannies. When I was in the 5th grade, my father retired and we moved to my maternal grandparent's farm in rural Kansas. There weren't many children nearby, so my sister Karen and I enjoyed the outdoors, riding our horses, usually with a dog or two following behind. Being a lover of horses and dogs, and an avid reader, I quite naturally became a huge fan of Walter Farley's books, like The Black Stallion.
After graduating from law school, in 1982, I practiced for a few years with a large firm in the KC area, but I eventually opened my own office in Olathe, Kansas--where I went to high school and also near our family farm where I grew up. My then wife, Marti, and I bought my grandparent's old farm house and we were fortunate enough to raise three children in it. In my free time, I started writing my own stories. My first work was a screen play called Easter Lily Hill. I sent it to Disney and they actually liked it, but I learned that there are a lot of ingredients that have to coalesce for a script or novel to find a home. In the writing business, there are a lot of near misses! But I found another place for that Kansas farm family in my next book, A Dog Named Christmas, which went on to be a best seller and Hallmark Hall of Fame Movie.
It's hard to believe that I've now been practicing law for over 40 years and that I have published 6 novels--several of which were best sellers and two that were be made into movies! Strange as it may seem, I still feel like I'm just getting started. I have so much more I want to do. Next spring, I have my first children's book coming out (Every Day is a Holiday). You might have guessed, but the main character is a little girl named Allie, named after my granddaughter, and her job is to find a name for every new dog that arrives at the shelter. I'm also working on several other projects, including a young adult novel about a ten year old boy that is whisked away on a Top Secret WWII mission. Finally, I'm taking a crack at my first nonfiction book based on my thirty plus years as a divorce mediator. Stay tuned!
