Events
I do very limited books signings. Because I have always enjoyed reading to children and creating stories for them, I prefer to speak at schools where I can encourage literacy and introduce potential writers to the craft of creative writing. My preferred target audience is K-8.
While open to being a traditional speaker at your school, I
recently started using an interactive format that is more interesting for the students. Several weeks in advance of my arrival, I send the school an original manuscript for a children's book, without illustrations. Each student competes for the illustration to go on one individual page. We then take the winning illustrations and meld them with the text. Finally, as part of my presentation, I read the book out loud from a shared screen on my laptop so that the students can see who won the and how their illustrations bring the book alive. After that, I speak about the writing process and answer questions.
